7 ways to set the right goals for the second half of the year
7 ways to set the right goals for the second half of the year7 ways to set the right goals for the second half of the yearIf you were one of the estimated 3.5 billion people watching the World Cup earlier this month, youll have noticed the importance placed on achieving goals. Outside of soccer though, its a lot easier to redefine your goals and reset them from time to time.Goals narrow your focus, direct your attention, drive behaviors, and allow you to gain momentum, said Beth Linderbaum, managing consultant at Right Management the global career and talent development unit within ManpowerGroup. And it isnt just the big picture goal that makes the biggest difference Having both short and long-term goals can be a guide as you move forward and will make sure you are going in the direction you want to go inWondering how to reignite or reset your own goals? The summer slowdown is a great time to take stock of what is working for you professionally and reset your goal expectations for th e second half of the year. Linderbaum said While goal setting is a proven approach to increasing our ability to achieve results and learn new behaviors, it isnt foolproof. Time and time again people set goals and fail to follow-through. She offered some tips on what to do when you get stuck. It might be time to step back and reflect on the followingWhat are you doing instead?Linderbaum says Often times we are faced with conflicting commitments and we end up spending time and energy on other activities that likely are serving us in some way but maybe not in moving toward this new goal. She believes that just noticing and exploring these competing commitments is a good place to start. Are you working on the few things your anfhrer cares most about?Your first priority is to thrill your boss and thats far more likely if you deliver on things that help them achieve their goals, according to Marc Effron, Talent Strategy Group president, entrepreneur, and author of the new book 8 STEPS TO HI GH wertmiger zuwachs Focus on What You Can Change (Ignore the Rest). Effrom suggests asking your manager directly if your goals are aligned with their priorities. Make sure you have no more than three big priorities to ensure that you can fully focus on whats most critical. Are you trying to do too much?Biting off more than you can chew is a common mistake people make when setting goals, according to Linderbaum. She even has a snappy reminder Remember, goals need to be SMART Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.Have you set your objectives to achieve a good job or to perform brilliantly?High performers measure themselves against what they think the best in their field could achieve according to Effron. For each of your goals, ask yourself what standard (cost, quality, speed) the best person in your field would set for this objective. Your objective shouldnt be to produce good enough work it should be to redefine what great looks like.Do you know where to start?S ometimes getting started is the hardest part, says Linderbaum. Asking yourself how until you get something you can do the next day is one way of finding an easy first step to take. What one thing could you do differently to ensure you achieve these goals?Effron says A high performer identifies and eliminates barriers to their performance. He suggests asking your boss what one thing you could do more of or less of to be an even better performer in the second half. Create a short, written action plan about how you plan to improve and ask your boss for feedback on it. Worried about what you might hear? Effron says Its your call whether you want to hear advice that will make you more successful or you prefer your boss wonders why you need improvement.Who can be your accountability partner?Linderbaum believes that finding someone that can ask you about progress is a simple trick for keeping yourself on track.Dont worry if you think youve blown your chance. Linderbaum refers to the sunk co st fallacy that affects our decision making. She says Sometimes once we go far down a path, we have a hard time abandoning that path because of all we have already invested. There are times when cutting your losses and moving down a new path might be the better choice, so dont be afraid to revisit and revise your goals if they dont seem to be working for youAnd goooooaaaaaal

To Choose the Best College Majors, Veterans Need Early Career Counseling, Data Shows
To Choose the Best College Majors, Veterans Need Early Career Counseling, Data ShowsTo Choose the Best College Majors, Veterans Need Early Career Counseling, Data ShowsTo Choose the Best College Majors, Veterans Need Early Career Counseling, Data ShowsIts a hard truth Nearly half of recent veterans who use their GI Bill benefits to further their post-secondary education are failing to obtain a diploma or certificate within a decade, says a study released this year. And according to an analysis by The Resume Place, a major cause of this shortfall is veteran students uninformed choice of college majors, which leads to underemployment, unemployment or just plain dissatisfaction. The details of the study Some 51.7 percent of post-9/11 veterans using GI Bill education benefits completed an associates, bachelors or graduate degree or a vocational certificate program within 10 years, according to a 2014 report by Student Veterans of America and partner organizations. This compares to a four- year graduation rate of 59 percent for young non-veterans in 2011, says a USA Today analysis of data from the National Center for Education Statistics. But there is plenty of hope for better outcomes, especially for veterans who seek advice early on in their college careers. If we can get student veterans talking early on in college, they can avoid mistakes in the choice of a major and a career, says Lisa Andrews, Ph.D., director of The Office of Career Services at University of Maryland University College. Its ideal to make a career choice before you choose your major.Career Counseling Should Help Steer Veterans Path Through CollegeVeterans are wise to choose a college major carefully and early, so that they get the maximum return on the GI Bill money and all the hard work they put into their higher education. Career counseling can enable that.Veteran students should select courses, projects, professors and internships that will support their post-graduation careers, says Kathryn T routman, author of Military to Federal Career Guide, Second Edition and president of The Resume Place.Student Veterans Face Barriers to Making Good Career ChoicesStudent veterans need advice because many dont know enough about which college majors will be the most marketable when they graduate. Nor do they necessarily understand how their military experience can help them build a civilian career.Veterans are a little reluctant about choosing what they want to do, says Andrews. In the military, they were always just told what their work assignments would be. So Andrews and her colleagues endeavor to help students express or discover what they like to do.Here are six steps that veteran students can take to steer their post-secondary studies toward a successful and rewarding career.Step 1 Examine How Military Experience Can Translate to a Civilian CareerStudent veterans who have done a certain job in the military need to analyze how it can translate to the world of civilian work, says Troutman. A college career counselor can translate military occupational jargon into language that will make sense to civilian hiring managers and human resources departments. As they begin their higher education, veterans should also find out if they can CLEP any of their military training or experience, which gives them a head start on the course credits they will need for graduation.Step 2 Take Assessments for Aptitudes and InterestsVeteran students can ask their college career counselors for testing to help them understand their own personality types, interests and skills. Assessments such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory are commonly given to college students. Assessments give you information about yourself that can help you make a career decision but they dont make that decision for you, says Andrews.Step 3 Explore Other Personal and Labor-Market Factors in the Career DecisionVeteran students should also look at their own talents, skills, ex perience and interests beyond their military tafelgeschirr to see what careers might be a good match. College career counselors can help veteran students research the marketability of various majors and the projected demand for the corresponding career fields. While earning potential is a critical consideration for most college students, it shouldnt be the sole basis for a career choice, says Troutman.Step 4 Choose a College Major As Soon As PossibleNext, student veterans should work with their counselors as early in their post-secondary education as possible to settle on the optimal college major, given their choice of careers. The earlier veterans elect a major, the sooner theyll be able to graduate and get on with their careers, family life, and other aspirations.Step 5 Find Student Internships Relevant to College Major and Choice of OccupationWith their numerous connections to employers and alumni, college career counselors can help veteran students line up internships, whic h are so often the best launch pad for the desired career. Counselors can help students write the resumes that may be required for internship applications.Step 6 Start Early on the Search for That First Post-Graduation Career PositionEarly in the final year of their post-secondary education, veteran students should begin working with their counselors to line up a well-chosen post-graduation job. Career counselors can help with resume, interview and job-fair preparation. They can also point soon-to-be-grads to the people, jobs databases and other resources that will be critical to finding an employment opportunity that aligns with their college major and career choice.Lisa Andrews has over 19 years of experience in higher education. As the Director of Career Services, her office services the over 93,000 students enrolled at University of Maryland University Center (UMUC), 50% of which are veterans. Amy Webb on the Future of the Creative Industry
Amy Webb on the Future of the Creative IndustryAmy Webb on the Future of the Creative IndustryAmy Webb, founder of the Future Today Institute, offers her insights on how technology will affect the creative workplace. Each year, The Creative Group and AIGA team up to find out what trends will impact creative teams for the Creative Team of the Future. As part of the latest research, we surveyed more than 800 creative professionals and interviewed industry veterans at leading organizations.GET THE CREATIVE TEAM OF THE FUTURE REPORTWe also consulted Amy Webb, author of the book The Signals Are Talking and founder of the Future Today Institute, a leading firm that researches near-future and long-term trends in technology. Webbs research focuses on how technology will transform the way we live, work and govern.TCG How do you think the workplace of the future will be different from that of today?Amy Webb I think were at the dawn of what I call the Industrial Evolution, in which we will evolv e from mechanized manufacturing to widespread automated transactions and services. Former DARPA project manager Gill Pratt describes it as a modern Cambrian Explosion, which was a brief moment in time about 540 mio years ago when ur predecessors went through a rapid period of evolution. Part of that evolution included our eyesight, which made the evolution into more complex and intelligent life forms possible. Pratt argues that advancements in deep learning, neural networks, AI and cloud robotics - in which every robot learns from the experiences of all robots, which leads to rapid growth of robot competence, particularly as the number of robots grows - could usher in a period of rapid advancement, after which our life on Earth might look very different. What digital trends or innovations do you see impacting the creative profession? As with every field, technology is both super-charging our abilities and disrupting our workplaces. Our research shows that within the next few years, there will be a number of tools available that automate the konzeption process. This includes messaging (predictive analytics that help identify what design and messaging are most likely to accomplish a set goal) and automation (algorithms that make the best possible selections from design exemplars). What emerging technologies should be on designers radars?Much of our future will be automated, which is a tremendous opportunity for designers. We will be scanning our phones and our faces well be engaging in more and more digital financial transactions. Just think of all the information that will need to be conveyed and the vital role design will play. Designers should plan ahead for how to organize this impending onslaught of information, how to communicate it effectively and - perhaps most important - how to demystify the technology well be surrounded by soon.It would also be wise for designers to think holistically, since our interactions will soon be omnidirectional. For example, we will be surrounded by machines that we talk to, and those machines will have names and personas. For as long as weve had computers, humans have felt the need to anthropomorphize them - so what will they look like? How can designers make them more relatable, especially to baby boomers? What disruptive forces threaten the creative industry?Automation, as it is for every industry, is similarly a threat for the creative industry. As algorithms become more capable of designing everything using our data, exemplars and parameters, they will necessarily threaten those whose job it has always been to think creatively. What creative roles will be most in demand?I havent seen these job titles yet, but heres some of what I anticipateautomation experience designerhuman-machine persona designeraugmented reality designermetaverse UX designerreal-time 3D designerneural virtual experience designerwearables (tattooables, injectables, earables) designeravatar designerhuman tissue and organ designer drone experience designergesture control designerchief experience officerchief design officerFrom your vantage point, what technical and soft skills will creative managers be looking for in new employees or hoping to develop in current staff? Do you see creative professionals of the future having to broaden their skill set to become hybrid professionals in order to remain marketable? This is a question that comes up in every profession, and it doesnt have a clear answer. In journalism, many are asking whether or not reporters should also know how to write code. Should lawyers have a deep understanding of metadata? Should graphic designers be expected to know JavaScript? Very few people are professional polymaths.Developing a strong set of design skills isnt necessarily at odds with being a solid coder, but design and code are two different disciplines that take time to master. My assumption is that managers will prefer applicants who can do both.Heres good advice for everyone While y ou dont need to master HTML5, for example, it would be wise for everyone in the creative field to have enough knowledge of the technical lexicon to be able to have an informed conversation. Technology will continue to intersect with design. Those in creative fields need to be conversant in both design and technology, even if they arent experts.
